Hannah Healy

 

In addition to being a portrait painter, California-native Hannah Healy finds herself motivated to explore environmental themes such as pollution, health, scientific discovery, and corporate responsibility in her interdisciplinary practice. Whether it’s a classical figure drawing or an animation of an anthropomorphic, plastic-eating bacteria, you will be struck by her mastery of 3D illusion.

"My aim is to reveal hard truths yet ultimately offer inspiration and hope. I find this balance by highlighting environmental organizations and scientific breakthroughs alongside my paintings via informational placards. Sometimes reality is overwhelming, so I like to show what actions our fierce environmental leaders are already taking. I hope to incentivise volunteerism and/or donations to these causes.

My process is informed by my training at Studio Incamminati, School for Contemporary Realist Art, which combines the traditions of the Renaissance drawing masters with the Impressionists’ color palette. Due to my passion for observational realism, I go through the extra step of building clay models when painting imaginary subjects. I am inspired by the aesthetic of contemporary artists working within figurative realism, imaginative realism, and dark surrealism. I am also inspired by muralists such as Eurhi Jones, one of my mentors, who prove so often to be fearless champions of critical issues.
